Creating Temporary Worlds
For us, curating and presenting our abstract paintings with precious metal leaf at an event dedicated to sustainability was a unique challenge. Perhaps because, at first glance, these seem to be two worlds speaking different languages. One speaks of the environment, resources, responsibility and the future. The other speaks of color, form, luminescence, emotion and the freedom to understand. For us, however, these two worlds meet precisely where everything begins: in the studio, in our work, and in the way we choose to create. They meet in the way we look at the world and in the way we choose to work with what it offers us.
This is how the idea for Green ART Tales came to life – a Pop-up contemporary abstract art exhibition that we curated especially for Green Sustainability Forum & Awards 2024: The Creators of Positive Impact, held at Nayam Events on 19 June 2024. We selected the works with nature, resources and our planet in mind, but also with the things that continually draw us to paint: color, contrast, matter and light. Green came naturally. It is the color of nature, regeneration and life. Red brought energy, tension and passion. And 24-karat Pure Gold leaf introduced light – that unique glow we seek in our work, a radiance that constantly changes with the gaze of the person encountering it.
We paint with matte tempera colors, creating surfaces that absorb light, and then add Pure Gold leaf, which reflects it. We love the encounter between the two: between what is absorbed and what glows, between stillness and intensity, between color and light.
But this exhibition also made us think about something that is not immediately visible in a work of art: the journey of the materials before they reach us.
For us, the choice of materials is part of our artistic practice. We carefully select our colors, canvases, wood and precious metal leaf. We use locally produced tempera colors, 100% cotton canvases, natural linen and FSC-certified wooden supports. For our Gold leaf, we choose materials with documented provenance and a verified supply chain, helping ensure that the material is not associated with the financing of armed conflicts.
Perhaps these are things the viewer will never see in a painting.
And yet, they matter to us so much.
Because art does not begin when the brush touches the canvas. It begins a little earlier – in the choice of premium-quality materials, in the way we use them, in our respect for what is available to us, and in the questions we ask ourselves about what we leave behind.
We do not believe that a single exhibition can say everything about sustainability. Nor did we want this exhibition to provide answers.
We simply wanted to open a conversation. To tell a story.
About nature.
About beauty.
About matter.
About resources.
About responsibility.
About the things we choose when we create.
About our art.
And perhaps, about the idea that sustainability does not always have to be an abstract concept. Sometimes, it can begin with a very concrete choice: what we buy, where it comes from, how we use our materials, and how much we value what we have.
On a day dedicated to people and projects seeking to build a more responsible future, we came with what we know best: art.
For a few hours, we created a temporary world of green, red, gold and light. A world that did not need to explain everything. Only to be seen. And perhaps, sometimes, this is where any change begins: with a moment when we stop, look more closely, and begin to see differently.
